Drums

Not far from the Asakusa shrine there is a jolly merry drum museum.

The fun stuff is all a few floors up via a small and unceremonial lift. On some drums there are red stickers (DO NOT TOUCH) and some have blue stickers (PLAY LIGHTLY) and the rest you can bash with all your God given might. Taiko drums, steel drums, military snare drums, bongos, box drums. Sticks are provided for most that need them and special soft headed hitters can be requested. Lots of fun. Take a friend.

After a few earsplitting hours of me banging on I was joined by an elderly Japanese lady. Even though I spoke only rudimentary Japanese and she barely any English, we managed to establish we had similar theological bents, partly through the use of hand gestures and sound effects. I've been invited to stay at her Ryokan free of charge and she said it features an incredible onsen. We hammered out a mean tune on a wooden marimba before parting company.

we didn't compare. had our conversation been more fluid, i'm sure some central tenants of our theological undergarments may have been raised.
